Arthroplasty or knee replacement surgery is prescribed when you experience pain while your knee is in a resting position or when your mobility is greatly reduced.

Your knee is damaged when the articular cartridge has worn away and the ends of your bones start to rub together instead of smoothly sliding over each other.

The most common reason for a knee replacement surgery is osteoarthritis. With osteoarthritis, the cartilage wastes away from natural wear and tear. Bones then have little or no protection to prevent rubbing when the knee moves.

In a perfect world, the knee joint acts as a hinge between the bones of the leg – the thigh bone or femur and the kneecap or patella. As the largest joint, the knee lends itself to being the most stressed joint. Cartilage covers the ends of the bones within the knee joint allowing them to slide smoothly over each other, without too much effort. Synovial fluid lubricates the joint for smooth movement.
