Different kinds of knee replacements
There aren’t any one size fits all solutions for knee replacements nor is the list below conclusive.
You and you surgeon will need to discuss the problem and the best design knee replacements options that can once again provide you with a pain-free, stable, mobile life.
A total knee replacement replaces a diseased knee joint with man-made components, eliminating the damaged weight bearing surfaces that are causing pain. A diagnosis of advanced osteoarthritis of the knee may indicate the need for total replacement of the knee joint.
There are three components to a knee implant for replacing three bone surfaces – the femur, the tibia, and the patella implants which is designed so a metal component always moves against plastic or other synthetic material to promote smooth movement and minimal future wear.
The fixed-bearing prostheses are by far the most commonly used and have a good range of motion. The difference between a fixed-bearing implant and a rotating platform implant is in the bearing surface which mimics the activity of a natural knee joint.
Do You Have a Knee Replacements Lawsuit?
Knee replacements may be cemented or cement-less depending on what’s used to hold the implant in place. The majority of knee replacements are generally cemented into place.
Knee replacements without cement rely on bone growth into the surface of the implant for fixation and will require longer healing time. Most implant surfaces are textured or coated so that the new bone actually grows into the surface of the implant. Screws or pegs may also be used to stabilize the implant until bone in-growth occurs.
Partial knee resurfacing is designed for faster recovery and improved surgical outcome. By targeting the portion of the knee that has become damaged by osteoarthritis, surgeons can isolate and resurface only the arthritic portion of the knee without compromising the healthy bone and tissue surrounding it.
Minimally invasive surgery (or MIS) is when shorter incisions are made to carry out the surgery. These smaller incisions only have to be large enough to get the cutting guides and the implants in.
