A nationally renowned orthopedic surgeon based in Los Angeles is responsible for alerting his colleagues that the implantable hip socket known as the Durom cup is poorly designed. Months after performing routine hip replacements, his patients who expected to live without pain for many years - were living in agony. The orthopedic surgeon implanted the same Durom cup metal hip socket in every patient. Several patients needed a replacement for their replacements.
The hip socket is made by Zimmer Holdings, Inc. While sales have been halted; there has been no recall. The manufacturer Zimmer says they are no plans to redesign the implantable hip socket or to recall it, but instead will better train doctors for how to implant the specialized device. Zimmer said that a low number of the 13,000 patients who received the implantable hip socket would need replacements, but many doctors think the number could reach into the hundreds.
Does the United States waste millions of dollars on medical devices that do not work? Medical and economic experts think so. Other countries have medical device databases or registries where they can monitor their colleagues’ success or failure with a medical device. Rather than implant thousands of hip sockets, doctors would halt usage if they were aware that 30 had failed.
As for the bottom line, for the fourth quarter of 2008 ending December 31, 2008, Zimmer announced net sales of $1.03 billion which was a decrease from the prior year same period. Overall total yearly sales were $4.12 billion, up from the previous year.
