Hip Replacement Surgery is Not Without Risks

Zimmer Hip Replacement

Nearly one million hips and knees were replaced in the United States last year. Mostly, hip replacement surgery is safe, but as with any surgery, complications can occur. Some complications may include:

Implant Failure, Loosening of Implant

As time passes hip implants wear out or many loosen. Most hip replacements last an average of 20 years. If and when the joint wears out, revision replacement surgery is required. Unfortunately, hip revision replacement surgery is more complex and with each hip implant, the lifespan of the hip implant decreases.

"Hip replacement therapy is not without risks. There is a 90 percent success rate. Are you one of the 10 percent?"

In the case of orthopedic surgeon whose patients were in agony because of the Zimmer Durom cup hip implant, he has put them through complicated revision replacement surgery years before the average. While trying to do the right thing for his patients, he’s put his reputation at risk as well as his patients’ current and future health.

Infections

Infection of a hip replacement is a very serious complication, and may necessitate removal of the implant. Infections can occur at any time and can be so serious that the implant will need to be removed and weeks of IV antibiotics administered.

Blood Clots

Blood clots in the leg veins can form as a result of decreased movement of your leg after surgery, as well as from injury to the veins during surgery. You will receive blood-thinning medications after surgery to prevent clots from forming. If a blood clot develops, it can travel to the lungs causing a pulmonary embolism and which can be potentially fatal.

Dislocation

Certain positions like bending more than 90 degrees at the hip or crossing your legs or falling can cause the ball of your new joint to become dislodged. Surgery usually isn't necessary to relocate your hip joint.

Joint Stiffening

Sometimes the soft tissues around your joint harden, making it difficult to move your hip - a process called ossification. Though not painful, your doctor may prescribe medication or therapy to prevent it.
