Zelnorm Sales Suspended: Zelnorm Causes Heart Attack & Stroke

• Zelnorm is a prescription drug prescribed for IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome).
• Zelnorm is prescribed to treat chronic constipation from IBS.
• Although IBS and constipation cause discomfort and distress, they are not life threatening. 

However, Zelnorm heart attacks, stroke, angina, and ovarian cysts are life threatening.

On March 30, 2007, Novartis Pharma, the Swiss pharmaceutical company stopped the sale and marketing of Zelnorm in the United States. The generic name of the drug is tegaserod; Zelnorm is the brand name.

The FDA originally approved Zelnorm in July 2002 for the short-term treatment, four to six weeks, of women, only, with constipation-predominant irritable bowel syndrome. In August 2004, men and women under age 65 could also use the drug in the United States as Zelnorm was approved at that time by the Food and Drug Administration.

Zelnorm approval was granted despite the fact that on July 14, 2004 the FDA's Gastrointestinal Drugs Advisory Committee, a panel of outside experts, recommended that there was not enough evidence to support the use of Zelnorm by men of any age.

During clinical trials, Zelnorm was associated with nine cases of ovarian cysts in women; eight of whom were taking the highest dose of Zelnorm. All eight developed symptoms and five underwent hospitalization and surgery.

Patients who are taking Zelnorm should seek emergency medical care if they experience severe chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, sudden onset of weakness or difficulty walking or talking, or other symptoms of a heart attack, angina, or stroke.
