He was going 90 miles per hour when an 81 year old man pulled his car out in front of him. The victim was killed instantly. It took emergency crews two hours to remove him from the car.
The police officer was responding to a call on Route 50 in Laureldale, New Jersey, however, he did not have his lights on nor his siren on.
The wrongful death victim's family is angry and feels the officer is getting away with a slap on the wrist.
Under Hamilton Township Police Department policy, officers can exceed the speed limit, but are supposed to use lights and sirens. Even in an emergency, police officers are not supposed to go more than 25 miles per hour over the limit. The black box in the squad car indicates the officer was going more than 40 mph over the speed limit.
The officer pled guilty to unsafe driving and was fined $789. No careless driving points were added to the officer's record although he still faces the possibility of disciplinary action.
The family plans to file a wrongful death suit against Hamilton Township.
