Newborn Heart Defects and Wellbutrin Antidepressant
What is the problem with women who took Wellbutrin antidepressants during pregnancy and babies born with heart defects?
According to a recent article in American Obstetrics & Gynecology, women who took bupropion (Wellbutrin) antidepressant during their first trimester may have an increased risk of having a baby with a certain heart defect.
Although the risk is purported to be small – two out of every 1,000 infants – may suffer congenital heart defects. If the newborn baby with the heart defect is yours, there is cause for possible legal action.
GlaxoSmithKline conducted the Bupropion Pregnancy Registry from September 1997 through March 31, 2008. The purpose of the Registry was to detect any major birth defect-causing pregnancies when exposed to Wellbutrin®, Wellbutrin SR®, Wellbutrin XL®, and Zyban® (smoking cessation).

The Registry closed to new entrants November 1, 2007, but among the 28 retrospectively reported birth defects, there were 12 reports of cardiac defects. According to the report, no rate calculations from retrospective reports are appropriate because the denominator is unknown and because of the bias in reporting of cases after the outcome is known.
According to GlaxoSmithKline, the results from this study have not been published and did not confirm a consistent pattern of defects. For all congenital malformations, the prevalence associated with 1,213 bupropion first trimester exposures was 23.1 per 1,000 infants.
As for the conclusion of the registry data report, the issue has been raised regarding an increase in cardiovascular risk-related antidepressants and the issue remains the subject of continuing enquiry.
