Vioxx® is a nonsteriodal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) formerly used to treat osteoarthritis, acute pain conditions and dysmenorrhoea.
Vioxx® is included in the group of NSAIDs known as COX-2 inhibitors or coxibs (CycloOxygenase-2 Inhibitors). In 2000, a study was completed by Merck known as the Vioxx® Gastrointestinal Outcomes Research or “VIGOR” clinical trial. In this trial, approximately 8,000 patients with arthritis participated taking either Vioxx®, Naproxen or other traditional pain killers. The VIGOR study indicated a significant four-fold increased risk of acute heart attack in Vioxx® patients when compared with Naproxen patients.
Nonetheless, the drug was approved and the FDA acted as a propaganda machine, catering to the interests of the drug companies. Meanwhile, people were dying.
On September 30, 2004, Merck voluntarily withdrew Vioxx® from the world market due to individuals suffering heart attacks and strokes. Over two million people were prescribed Vioxx® at that time. Merck was fully aware of the health risks of its Cox-2 inhibitor anti-inflammatory drug as early as March 2000. There was a concerted effort to bury negative evidence and even distort the drug trials by excluding heart patients from the Vioxx studies so that the rate of cardiovascular problems for Vioxx® patients would not be obvious.
On August 19, 2005, a jury awarded Carol Ernst $253.4 million dollars in damages as a result of the death of her husband from a heart attack after he took Vioxx® . The jury found Merck liable for lost pay, mental anguish, loss of companionship and punitive damages.
