Worldwide Aprotin Doubles the Risk of Kidney Failure
A drug approved by the FDA, and sold worldwide for the last 13 years has now been proven to double a patient's risk of kidney failure, and increase the risk of heart attack, heart failure, and stroke. The drug Aprotinin has been given to an estimated one million surgery patients to limit bleeding. FDA Approves Aprotinin (1993)
1993-The Food and Drug Administration today announced approval of aprotinin, a drug that can reduce the need for blood transfusions in patients undergoing heart bypass surgery. Its use should be reserved for high risk patients, however, because severe allergic reactions can result from using it more than once in a patient.
