Serious complications associated with surgical mesh implant

When a medical device like surgical mesh implant or any implant has problems, serious complications ensue.

Unlike shoes that cause corns or pierced earrings that cause pus, the shoes and earrings can easily be removed and replaced.

But with a surgical mesh implant…not so much.

The surgical mesh implant is trapped inside the woman’s vaginal area and cannot be self expelled. 

The first complication is that another surgery is involved to remove the offending risk. Removal of the surgical mesh is not simple because the implant may have eroded or partially dissolved.

Surgery itself always presents risks – risks of anesthesia error, bacterial infections, and bowel and bladder punctures during placement and removal.

The surgical mesh implant can contract causing the vaginal area to shorten or tighten and cause discomfort or worse, unbearable pain.

Further serious complications are painful urination; internal bleeding; prone to infections; painful sexual intercourse for both partners; mesh erosion into the bladder, vagina, uterus, and intestines; mesh migration; and reoccurrence of the reason why the surgical mesh implant was used in the first place – reoccurrence of pelvic organ prolapse or stress urinary incontinence.
