How do you know that a person has a traumatic brain injury?

After a blow or jolt, here are some common side effects and symptoms:

  • Headaches or neck pain that won't go away
  • Difficulty remembering or making decisions
  • Slowness in thinking, speaking, acting, or reading
  • Getting lost or easily confused
  • Feeling tired all of the time, lack of energy or motivation
  • Mood changes without cause
  • Changes in sleep patterns
  • Light-headed, dizzy, or loss of balance
  • Nausea
  • Increased sensitivity to lights or sounds
  • Blurred vision
  • Loss of sense of smell or taste
  • Ears ringing

Children with a brain injury can have the same symptoms as adults but unfortunately are often unable to explain how they feel or what hurts. If your child has any or a combination of these symptoms, seek medical help immediately:

  • Listlessness
  • Inability to be consoled
  • Will not eat or nurse
  • Changes in sleep patterns
  • Changes in the way the child plays
  • Performs differently at school
  • Lack of interest in favorite toys or activities
  • Loss of new skills, such as toilet training
  • Loss of balance
