Many children and adults with ADHD symptoms may be unable to sit still, plan ahead, finish tasks, or be fully aware of what's going on around them. To their families, classmates, and teachers, these children and adults seem to exist in a world of disorganized or frenzied chaos.

Physicians often use a checklist of symptoms to determine whether a child or adult has Attention Deficit Disorder or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

The American Psychiatric Association lists 14 ADHD symptoms, which at least eight symptoms must be present for a child or adult to be officially classified as ADHD.

People who display the hyperactive symptoms of ADHD always seem to be in motion. Sitting still can be an impossible task. They may dash around, squirm in their seats, roam around the room, or talk incessantly. They often do repetitive motions like wiggling their feet or tapping a pencil to bring them back to focus and burn off excessive energy. Many children and adults who display the hyperactive symptoms feel intensely restless and may try to do several things at once, bouncing around from one activity to the next.

Combined ADHD symptoms include a mix of inattentive and hyperactive ADHD symptoms.

Parents should know that not every overly hyperactive, inattentive, or impulsive child with the classic symptoms of ADD or ADHD has the disorder. Everyone, at some point in his or her life, blurts out things they didn't mean to say, bounces around a number of tasks or become disorganized and forgetful. Specialists typically consider excessive behavior that is long-term and pervasive when looking at ADHD symptoms.

Most experts claim that the true prevalence of ADHD in the United States is about three to five percent or roughly two million children. Currently, about six million children take prescription medication for ADHD.
