Antidepressants – Prozac Birth Defects, SSRI Drugs
Prozac is perhaps the best known of the SSRI drug class because this antidepressant has been around the longest – since 1986. Prozac has spawned an army of other SSRI drugs to treat depression, bipolar disorder, obsessive compulsive behavior, bulimia, and panic disorders.
Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to get pregnant while taking Prozac. Talk to your doctor about the benefits and risks of treating your depression if you are pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant.
Women who were prescribed certain selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitors or SSRI during pregnancy were more likely to have a baby with an omphalocele. One of those SSRI brands is Prozac.

Prozac is a pregnancy Category C drug. Drugs are classified by the FDA as to their potential risk to the unborn. A category C drug means animal studies have been done and had adverse side effects but no adequate studies of Prozac on humans. Most drugs fall into this C category.
This does not mean that Prozac or category C drugs are safe for pregnant women.
