Being professional athlete is a career. The role of a professional athlete is also a hard job but not one as an employee but rather a contract for hire. Granted it has much glamour and many perks, even opportunities to hobnob with celebrities and sometimes marry them. Being a professional athlete is an enviable position. Everyone wants to be the next big superstar. A pro sports athlete will always be more physically demanding than most other careers.
Do most ball clubs want to pay disability? Not really. Disability is required by law but don’t expect to get rich from disability. The same can be said for professional athletes.
Until recently, the general public and our elected officials were clueless as to what happens to former professional athletes when they are injured or must retire from permanent injuries.
Testimony was given at a House Judiciary Subcommittee in June 2007. What was made clear by these hearings was that football is a violent blood sport. Professional athletes at the top of their game think they’re indestructible. What has not been publicized is that for over 25 years, the various sport unions for years have encouraged their members to pursue worker compensation benefits in order to ensure future medical care.
Some players have bought private insurance, and even then have faced problems collecting on those policies. In those cases, we have been engaged to assist those plaoyers in colecting on these policies.
By now it should be apparent it depends on state lines as to what sort of financial support an injured athlete will receive after an injury sidelines them, perhaps for the rest of their lives. Hopefully, it is also apparent that in no way is this a fair treatment for those that deserve to at least get back their normal life.
