Diabetes, Insulin and Hypoglycemia

What are the risks of too much insulin?

Relion Overdose Attorneys>When a person has blood glucose levels above normal, they are considered to have diabetes. Most of the food we eat turns into glucose. Our bodies use this for energy. The pancreas is an organ that lies near the stomach and makes a hormone called insulin which helps glucose into the cells of our bodies.

If you have diabetes, it means your body doesn’t make enough insulin or cannot use its own insulin as well as it should. Without the optimal use of insulin, sugar builds up in your blood.

"Insulin shock occurs when there is too much in the body and can be caused by taking too much medication, by failing to eat, by heavy exercise, and by emotional factors."

Diabetes cause serious health problems like heart disease, blindness, kidney failure, and lower-extremity amputations. Diabetes even causes death.

Type 1 diabetes has been formerly called juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is usually first diagnosed in children, teenagers, or young adults. Treatment for type 1 diabetes includes taking insulin, making good food choices, being physically active, and controlling blood pressure and cholesterol.

Type 2 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes which was formerly called adult-onset diabetes or noninsulin-dependent diabetes. People can develop type 2 diabetes at any age. Type 2 diabetes usually begins with insulin resistance, a condition in which fat, muscle, and liver cells do not use insulin properly. At first, the pancreas keeps up with the added demand by producing more insulin. In time, however, it loses the ability to secrete enough insulin in response to meals. Being overweight and inactive increases the chances of developing type 2 diabetes.

Treatment includes using diabetes medicines, making wise food choices, being physically active, taking aspirin daily, and controlling blood pressure and cholesterol.

Insulin: You need insulin if your body has stopped making insulin or if it doesn’t make enough. Everyone with type 1 diabetes needs insulin. Many people with type 2 diabetes do too.

The most common way of taking insulin is through injections. You use a needle attached to a syringe-a hollow tube with a plunger-that you fill with a dose of insulin. Some people use an insulin pen, a pen-like device with a needle and a cartridge of insulin.

Insulin shock occurs when there is too much in the body. This condition rapidly reduces the level of sugar in the blood and the brain cells suffer. Insulin shock can be caused by taking too much medication, by failing to eat, by heavy exercise, and by emotional factors.

Too much insulin can cause hypoglycemia. For example, taking a dose of insulin-or other medication that increases insulin levels-but then skipping a meal could result in hypoglycemia.

Hypoglycemia causes symptoms such as:

  • hunger
  • shakiness
  • nervousness
  • sweating
  • dizziness or light-headedness
  • sleepiness
  • confusion
  • difficulty speaking
  • anxiety
  • weakness
