What is Raptiva?
Raptiva was approved in 2003. Raptiva is a powder and solvent made up into a solution for a weekly injection to treat patients suffering from moderate to severe psoriasis.
Raptiva is a biologic drug and is the newest type of systemic psoriasis treatment. Since 2003, the FDA has licensed three biologics to treat moderate to severe plaque psoriasis. The FDA has licensed Raptiva and Enbrel for home treatment. People can inject themselves with Raptiva under the skin once a week or with Enbrel once or twice a week. Both drugs are recommended for continuous use to maintain results.
Biologic drugs are immunosuppressants which may carry an increased risk of infection and cancer. Rare but serious effects have also included blood abnormalities and autoimmune diseases such as lupus. Other side effects are flu-like symptoms and pain and inflammation at the injection site.
Raptiva works by suppressing T-cells in the immune system to keep the body from producing excess skin cells which causes the scaly, build-up of plaques. By suppressing T-cells, Raptiva also increases a patient's susceptibility to infections. Do you or a loved one have a brain infection caused by Raptiva?
Patients prescribed Raptiva have already failed to respond to, or cannot take other whole-body treatments for psoriasis, including ciclosporin and other drugs.
Who is Genentech?
Genentech (NYSE: DNA) markets Raptiva in the United States. The San Francisco-based biotech giant manufactures products for cancer, heart attack, asthma, psoriasis, stroke, rheumatoid arthritis, cystic fibrosis, and macular degeneration. Genentech appears on numerous lists for best places to work. Genentech has donated free medicine to uninsured patients to the tune of over one billion dollars.
For the fourth quarter of 2008, U.S. product sales were $2,495 million, a 13 percent increase from $2,199 million in the fourth quarter of 2007. In 2009, Genentech hopes to receive four FDA approvals and anticipates filing more than ten regulatory applications for new indications. In Europe, Raptiva is marketed by Merck Serono, a division of Germany's Merck KGaA.
