Psoriasis, Chronic Skin Disorder and Fatal Brain Infections
Psoriasis is a dry, scaly skin condition producing lesions and silver scale-looking plaque in which skin cells reproduce at a faster rate than normal skin cells, which take about 21 to 28 days. With psoriasis, skin cells reproduce in 2 to 6 days meaning there is a constant and chronic shedding of skin along with intense itching and sometimes arthritis pain. Between 150,000 and 260,000 new cases are diagnosed each year, including 20,000 cases in children aged 10 and younger.
Do You Have a Psoriasis and Fatal Brain Infections Lawsuit? »
Although ugly and sometimes scary looking, psoriasis is not contagious. Unfortunately psoriasis sufferers may be discriminated against based of how they look.
According to the National Psoriasis Foundation, more than 5 million Americans have psoriasis, and spend between $1.6 billion and $3.2 billion each year to treat the disease. One third has severe cases and two-thirds have mild to moderate cases. In about one-third of psoriasis cases, there is a family history of the disease. In genetically predisposed children, psoriasis can be triggered by strep or another infection.
Unfortunately, there is no cure for psoriasis, but there is a range of treatments to reduce the symptoms, clear up the skin, and drive psoriasis into remission. For some people, remission can last for years. For others, flare-ups occur every few weeks. Stress and seasonal changes can trigger psoriasis as well as drugs like lithium, beta-blockers, and anti-malaria drugs.
FDA approved treatments include topical creams and lotions, lasers that aim ultra-violet rays into the skin, oral medications, and injections or biologics – which should only be used for a limited time because of their serious side effects.
For many people coping with psoriasis, first impressions count and the emotional impact of body image and public reaction is challenging.
