Senate Approves Bill for Car Seats Up to Age 8

Children under age 8 will have to be secured in a booster seat when riding in a passenger vehicle. The Texas Senate passed legislation to that effect in April 2007. Current law requires booster seats for children under 5 and less than 3 feet tall. The bill would raise the height requirement to 4 feet 9 inches tall and put Texas law in line with federal guidelines.

Starting in June 2008, people who don't follow the law would face a $25 fine. The state would use that money to buy booster seats for low-income families. Until then, police officers would only issue warnings
