There seems to be a conspiracy against motherhood. Don't even think about being sad or depressed or someone - the government or the pharmaceutical companies - are going to make sure that you start taking Paxil for probably the rest of your life. There's a new bill, invading family life -- Senate Bill 0015, the Postpartum Mood Disorders Prevention Act. The new bill calls upon the state to develop policies and procedures related to the prevention, treatment, and diagnosis of postpartum mood disorders in women (thank you Andrea Yates).
Does the government have any business mandating mental health screening of any form, especially in the intimate time of childbirth? The new bill calls for women to be screened at prenatal visits, before taking her newborn home, at post-partum visits, and at every well baby checkup for the child's first year of life - now that's depressing!
