The fastest growing segment of the population is people who are entering their 80s. In generations past, children and siblings cared for their parents often in their homes. But with today's demands on time, children find it necessary to put their parents into nursing homes. If a parent is cognizant they may feel abandoned and whether a parent is cognizant or not the adult children may suffer extreme depression and guilt over the decision as well as negative pressure from their community and cousins.
As more people enter nursing homes, there are more opportunities for elder abuse as well as physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. (Jewish Week)
