http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dpd/parasites/acanthamoeba/2007outbreak_investigate_ak.htm#3Preliminary analysis revealed that people with Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) who used soft contact lenses were at least 7 times more likely to have used Advance Medical Options Complete MoisturePlus? (AMOCMP) compared with a group of healthy adult soft contact lens users. Among the 46 people with AK assessed in the preliminary analysis, 39 were soft contact lens users and 36 of these 39 people could identify the specific brand or brands of contact lens solutions they used. Of these, 21 people reported some use of AMO MoisturePlus in the month before symptom onset; more than half or people reported using AMO MoisturePlus as their primary solution and more than one third reported using AMO MoisturePlus contact solution as their exclusive solution.
Although the analysis on May 24, 2007 was preliminary, CDC believes that the strength of the association between the use of Advance Medical Options Complete MoisturePlus and the development of Acanthamoeba keratitis among soft contact lens users warranted public health intervention.
Class Action Lawsuits are expected.
