AMO Complete MoisturePLUS Recall
The FDA posted on 05/29/2007 a warning about AMO (Advanced Medical Optics) products for lens cleaning. In particular, the FDA informed healthcare professionals and consumers who wear soft contact lenses of a recall of Complete MoisturePlus Multi-Purpose Solution.
The reason for this recall are reports of eye infections from a parasite, Acanthamoeba keratitis. There is now a confirmed link between MoisturePlus. This has been confirmed by the CDC. Acanthamoeba keratitis is very dangerous. The parasite can cause vision loss with some patients requiring a corneal transplant or blindness.

Acanthamoeba keratitis affects healthy people who wear contact lenses. Symptoms of Acanthamoeba keratitis are similar to common eye infections, so it is necessary to get the correct diagnosis.
Symptoms include:
- eye pain
- redness
- blurred vision
- light sensitivity
- sensation of something in the eye
- excessive tearing
Acanthamoeba is difficult to treat. Thus, if you wear soft contact lenses, you should stop using the Advanced Medical Optics Complete MoisturePlus product immediately. The FDA urges you to "discard all remaining solution including partially used or unopened bottles, and ask their healthcare professional about choosing an appropriate alternative cleaning/disinfecting product."
If you have problems, you should seek immediate treatment. Early diagnosis is important for effective treatment.
