Iowa Girl Scout Camp Closes Then Opens after Bacterial Meningitis

A western Iowa Girl Scout camp has reopened after a camp counselor died of bacterial meningitis. The camp near Sioux City had been closed because of 20-year-old camp counselor's illness. She eventually died.The camp was sanitized and staff members vaccinated. Bacterial meningitis is an infection of the fluid surrounding the spinal cord and brain. It's a contagious disease spread through saliva, including sharing beverages or other forms of intimate contact.
