Symptoms of Breast Cancer

Early detection is often crucial to overcoming a serious medical condition. When a disease reaches its later stages, it can be incredibly difficult to treat. With a potentially terminal condition such as breast cancer, early detection is critical. This is because such detection can greatly improve the chances of sending the cancer into permanent remission. Needless to say, this is important to recognize early warning signs in the form of symptoms of breast cancer. While the following list of symptoms is by no means an exhaustive list, it does provide the main signs to look out for in order to achieve early detection.

Breast Lumps. While the presence of lumps does not automatically indicate breast cancer, it is a very serious red flag. That means if lumps are developing in the breast tissue it is critical to visit a doctor. The doctor can then perform screenings in order to ascertain whether or not the lumps are cancerous.

Discharge. It is there is any bloody discharge or other type of fluid secreting from the nipple this is an extreme red flag possibly cancerous tissue is present.

Tenderness.  If the breast area is extremely tender, a potentially serious condition might be the underlying cause. Of course, there are a number of benign causes for tenderness. However, if the tenderness is present with other symptoms then it one should seek a consultation with a physician. Note: such problematic feelings are not limited exclusively to the breast area. If there is tenderness in the armpit, for example, this could be a warning sign as well.

Severe Discoloration, Scaling, Pitting. When the appearance of the breast starts to become altered, this can be cause for concern. For example, if there are red marks or streaks on the surface of the breasts, then a serious condition might be the cause.  Also, if the nipples become altered in color or texture, cancerous tumors might be the reason for such blemishes. Cancerous tumors have also been known to cause scaling or peeling of the nipple. That is why it is important to be vigilant for these problems as well.

Hardness of the tissue. If breast tissue starts to harden or presents "valleys and indentations", this could be indicative of cancerous tumors underneath the surface of the skin.  To determine whether or not a tumor exists, a doctor will need to examine what is causing the hardening.

If you discover you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it would be best to seek an examination from a qualified physician.  Again, a proper diagnosis and early detection will go very far towards making cancer treatment successful.  That is why it is critical to understand and identify the common symptoms.
