The Importance of Early Diagnosis of Breast Cancer

As previously mentioned, the key to defeating breast cancer is early detection. That means the diagnosis must be made at the earliest possible stage. Keep in mind, he vast majority of breast cancer survivors falling into the category of early diagnosis and detection. This is because treating advanced stage of cancer is extremely difficult.

Yet, many ignore warning signs and avoid visiting a doctor. No one likes to hear bad news. The common way avoid bad news is remain reclusive or in denial. That is, an individual can take many steps to ignore information that is not convenient.  In some instances, such actions yield minimal consequences. When it comes to breast cancer, however, the assumption of a “clean bill of health” can be potentially fatal. Yes, the stakes are that high. As such, it is critical to make no personal determinations as to whether or not one is cancer free.  Instead, it is critical to undergo an examination with a qualified physician to ascertain whether or not cancer is present with 100% accuracy.

As many cancer survivors will attest, early detection is the key to increasing the odds of survival. After all, it is much easier to send cancer into remission when is it the beginning stages as opposed to after it has ravaged through the body. Also, the number of treatments might be reduced when cancer is detected at an earlier stage. That is, if chemotherapy is employed to reduce the spread of the cancer when there is very little cancer present, the number of chemotherapy treatments will be reduced. 

Again, early detection reduces the need for invasive treatments. Without a doubt, the most psychologically and physically difficult procedure to undergo would be a mastectomy.  A mastectomy involves the surgical removal of the breasts.  This is done to eliminate the further spread of cancerous tissue to the internal organs. Ultimately, the goal of a mastectomy is to save the cancer patient's life.  However, no woman wishes to undergo the amputation of her breasts.  While this is unavoidable in certain circumstances, early detection will greatly reduce the necessity for a mastectomy.  This is because they cancerous tissue may be sent into remission prior to being past the point of no return.

As with any other serious situation, no more time you have on your side and the more options you have available. Detecting breast cancer early will provide additional time to expand treatment options. In some cases, if the discovery of cancer occurs early enough, less invasive treatments might be possible. Sadly, if too much time has passed many may be impossible to reverse the fatal spread of breast cancer.
