What Problems Does Shoulder Dystocia Present?
For the baby:
- brachial plexus palsies, especially Erb's palsy, which are nerve damage that can lead to permanent disability and deformity.
- broken bones
- permanent brain damage due to suffocation during the birth.
- death
For the mother:
- hemorrhage
- uterine rupture
- painful separation of the pelvic bones
- rectovaginal fistula— a permanent opening that tears between the vagina and the rectum. In addition to being a painful and embarrassing deformity, they can cause repeated infections. Surgery is the only cure.
