It is often mistaken for growing pains or another non-serious process. In some cases, the complaints of pain are dismissed as evidence of depression. If an adolescent has severe or intense pain lasting 4 weeks or more and physical examination and x-ray do not reveal a cause, parents may wish to consider seeing a specialist for potential referral for a bone scan or MRI of the affected area. Ewing's Sarcoma can be very aggressive and is often fatal but is also very curable if discovered early. While it is not malpractice for a doctor to consider non-malignant causes for severe pain upon a first visit, it may be malpractice for a doctor to ignore persistent pain without adequate follow-up.
