What is cerebral palsy? Cerebral Palsy is a broad term used to describe a group of chronic movement or posture disorders. Cerebral refers to the brain, while Palsy refers to a physical disorder, such as a lack of muscle control. Cerebral Palsy is not caused by problems with the muscles or nerves, but rather with the brain's ability to adequately control the body. Cerebral Palsy can be caused by injury during birth, although sometimes it is the result of later damage to the brain. Symptoms usually appear in the first few years of life and once they appear, they generally do not worsen over time.
Cerebral palsy: What are the different types?
Spastic cerebral palsy is the most common type of cerebral palsy. Muscles are jerky and rigid and make moving around difficult.
Athetoid dyskinetic is the second most frequently diagnosed type of cerebral palsy. Children will have normal intelligence, but the body will have muscle problems such as weak muscle tone further making walking, sitting, and speech difficult. Drooling is also a problem.
Ataxic Cerebral Palsy is the least diagnosed. Fine motor skills of tying shoes and cutting with a scissor are difficult tasks. Balance and coordination is problematic as well as tremors.
Parents notice that a baby has muscle control problems early in life. The baby's head seems floppy and motor skills are developmentally delayed. This is Hypotonic Cerebral Palsy caused by brain damage that occurred while the brain was still developing.
Children who do not fit into one of the above types are considered as having mixed Cerebral Palsy.
Congenital Cerebral Palsy is not really a type of CP but rather a birth defect. It is not inherited and not caused by medical error.
Erb's Palsy happens from a birthing accident. It is also known as brachial plexus palsy. Brachial plexus injuries happen when a baby's shoulders become impacted during delivery and the brachial plexus nerves stretch or tear. If your baby has Erb's palsy, she will have no muscle control in her arm. The arm will be limp and have no feeling.
There are four types of Erb's Palsy:
