Death Toll From Alcohol Related Automobile Accidents
Don’t drink and drive. It is a lesson that is taught early and often in many school districts across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and across the nation – and for good reason. Quite simply, drunk driving accidents are the cause of many fatal car wrecks.
In 2008, drunk driving was the cause of about one third of fatal car crashes in the United States. 11,773 people died in drunk driving accidents that year. In Pennsylvania, drunk driving accidents accounted for 534 deaths in 2008. That made drunk driving the cause of fatal Pennsylvania crashes about 36% of the time. 76% of the fatal Pennsylvania drunk driving accidents occurred at night and more than half involved young drivers under age 30.
