How Many Alcohol Related Car Crashes Occur in Pennsylvania
In 2009, the most recent year for which data is available from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, alcohol related car accidents remained a serious problem in the Commonwealth.
Specifically:
- 12,712 alcohol related crashes occurred. That averages to more than 34 crashes per day or more than one accident every hour of every day.
- Alcohol related crashes accounted for about 10% of all Pennsylvania accidents.
- 449 people died in alcohol related crashes. Alcohol related car accident fatalities accounted for 36%of all fatal 2009 Pennsylvania car accidents.
- Approximately 26 people per day were injured in Pennsylvania drunk driving accidents.
- 70% of the people who died were the drunk drivers.
- 73% of the drinking drivers involved in car accidents were male.
- More than a third of fatal alcohol related crashes occurred between midnight and 4 a.m.
- 48% of alcohol related crashes occurred on Saturdays and Sundays.
