Levaquin, a type of Fluoroquinolone antibiotic, has been linked to dangerous tendon ruptures. Everyone who takes Levaquin is at risk for tendon ruptures. The risk is even greater for people who engage in physical activity, who are over 60, who are on certain other medications or who have had kidney, lung or heart transplants. This serious side effect can occur on any dose of Levaquin and when the drug is administered in tablet, oral or injected form.
How Do I Know If I am Suffering from a Tendon Rupture?
Tendons are tissues that connect muscles and bones. Pain, swelling, inflammation, a snap or pop in the tendon area, bruising and the inability to bear weight in the area can all be symptoms of a dangerous tendon rupture. The symptoms often occur at the Achilles tendon at the back of the ankle but may also occur at any other tendon site in the body including the shoulder and the hand. Some symptoms such as swelling or inflammation may occur gradually or a patient may experience a snap or pop that indicates a sudden tear or rupture. Tendon rupture can occur up to several months after a patient has taken Levaquin so it is important for patients to remain alert to the symptoms of tendon rupture for at least several months after they stop using the medication.
What Should I Do if I Suspect a Tendon Problem?
It is important to seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of the symptoms described above. Until you see your doctor and receive a diagnosis, you should avoid physical activity and stop using Levaquin. Your doctor may prescribe you a different antibiotic to deal with the underlying infection for which Levaquin was originally prescribed. Your doctor will likely do a thorough examination, and go over treatment options, including surgery, with you if the tendon has ruptured.
Why are Tendon Ruptures Dangerous?
If left untreated tendon ruptures are extremely painful and can result in permanent disabilities. Complications include bleeding, infection and even death in some cases. For these reasons, it is important to be aware that tendon ruptures are a known side effect of Levaquin, to be aware of the symptoms of tendon ruptures and to seek immediate medical care if you develop any symptoms while you are taking Levaquin or in the months following your last dose.
If you have suffered a tendon rupture due to Levaquin use then please contact a pharmaceutical litigation attorney to discuss your legal rights and potential legal claims against the drug’s manufacturer.
