Chinese drywall was imported into the United States during the residential construction boom of the mid 2000s. During that time there was not enough domestically made drywall to support residential construction in this country. However, the companies that made, imported, distributed and used the Chinese drywall did not accurately predict the health problems and safety concerns that would arise from their decisions.
Knauf Plasterboard Tianjin Co. Ltd
Knauf Plasterboard Tianjin Co. Ltd (KPT) is owned by the Knauf Group of Germany. The company manufactured drywall from two Chinese plants that have exported drywall to the United States since 2006. The company claims that its toxicologists have investigated the allegations raised by American homeowners and have found no connection between the drywall that it exported and the foul smell, pipe corrosion and health problems cited by many American families living in home with Chinese drywall.
A class action lawsuit has been filed by American homeowners against KPT. The lawsuit claims that the drywall provided by the company contains harmful toxins that are endangering the welfare of those who live with it. A lawsuit has also been filed against KPT by U.S. home builder Lennar Corporation. Lennar claims that KPT sold a defective product that was installed in homes that it built and that it too is a victim of KPT.
Lennar Corporation
Lennar Corporation, a Miami based company that was founded in 1954, is one of the leading home builders in the United States today. The company used Chinese drywall in many of the homes that it constructed in the mid 2000s. While NBC reports that Lennar is standing by the homes that it build and incurring the cost of relocating homeowners while it replaces all of the drywall in the affected homes, several lawsuits have already been brought against Lennar.
Homeowners expected that the newly constructed homes which they bought would be safe and they counted on both Lennar as the builder and KPT as the drywall provider to ensure that safety. Both companies have allegedly failed to provide their customers with that safety and both will need to answer to those customers when they have their days in court.
