Possible Toxins in Chinese Drywall

Toxic Drywall Removal

Owners of newly built homes across the country are getting sick. Many report the presence of an unpleasant smell, corroded pipes and significant health problems such as respiratory illnesses and bloody noses since they bought homes that were constructed within the last five years.

A preliminary report issued by the Florida Department of Health found that the cause of the rotten egg smell reported by homeowners living with Chinese drywall could be attributable to Hydrogen Sulfide, Carbonyl Sulfide and Carbon Disulfide, all of which were found in the drywall. The Department of Health’s investigation found that all three compounds were present in levels ranging from 100 ppb to 1 ppm.

Many of these homeowners claim that the problems stem from possible toxins in the Chinese drywall that was used in the construction of their homes. The potential toxins include:

  • Iron Disulfide (FeS2 pyrite): Iron Disulfide can start a fire spontaneously making it a dangerous substance to have in your walls.
  • Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S): hydrogen sulfide is a broad spectrum poison which means that it can affect many different systems in the human body. Low concentrations of this substance can create health problems such as those reported by people living with Chinese drywall including eye irritation, respiratory problems and extreme fatigue. High levels can be deadly.
  • Carbonyl Sulfide: This compound, like others that include sulfur, smells like rotten eggs and is potentially dangerous at high levels. It, like iron disulfide, can ignite and cause a fire.
  • Sulfur Dioxide (SO2): This compound is an allergen that can cause respiratory problems among those who are sensitive to its emission.
  • Carbon Disulfide (CS2): At very high levels this compound can be deadly. It can also be volatile under certain conditions.

Further investigations are currently being conducted to determine which of these chemicals are present in homes with Chinese drywall and in what quantities. While homeowners eagerly await the results of these tests, many are unwilling to risk further health problems by waiting in their homes and are seeking legal recourse against both the drywall manufacturer and the home builder. If you believe that you have been harmed by the installation of Chinese drywall in your home then you should seek the advice of an experienced attorney.
