A liver transplant is no walk in the park. Liver transplantation is a serious surgery where a healthy liver is removed from one person (a liver donor) to replace a sick or injured liver in another person. Liver transplant surgery is not taken on lightly. It's a means to saving a life.
Liver transplant surgery is needed for patients who are likely to die because of liver failure. People who have hepatitis C, cirrhosis, some liver cancer are likely candidates for liver transplant surgery. Liver failure is also caused by harmful prescription drugs and herbal dietary supplements like Hydroxycut weight loss and bodybuilding supplements.
The demand for liver donors far exceeds the supply needed for liver transplant surgery.
Before a patient can be considered for a liver transplant, he need to be placed on the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) wait list which requires an extensive medical exam, blood typing and numerous blood tests, medical history, and possible liver biopsy.
Transplant centers are supposed to follow strict rules on the use of liver organs and organs in general. Priority goes to children. Other criteria includes compatibility between the donor liver and recipient; geography (some organs last a few hours after extraction); population where waiting times in large metropolitan areas may be greater because of the increased urgency of need; and the likely improvement in quality and length of a recipient's life. The sickest but eligible and more likely to recover people receive liver organs before those whose health status will allow them to wait longer for their transplants.
Patients must be in close touch with their liver transplant coordinator who may contact them at any time to be notified of pending liver transplant surgery.
During liver transplant surgery, the patient will receive general anesthesia. The diseased liver will be removed and the prepped healthy liver will be put in place. Blood vessels are sewn together and the bile duct of the donor liver will be sewn to the bile duct of the recipient patient. Special stitches will close the abdomen. The surgery lasts between 5 to 8 hours. The patient goes to intensive care where he is closely monitored.
After all this top-notch medical care, the patient is still at risk for complications of infection and liver rejection.
Another problem a patient in need of liver transplant surgery might face is that her health insurance company may reject a claim for the need or to reimburse at a reduced level. Unfortunately, bad faith insurance companies run amuck.
For people dealing with liver failure caused by over-the-counter weight loss products, the last thing you need is stress from your healthcare company for not wanting to pay the major medical bills.
Liver damage and the need for life-saving liver transplant surgery from a bodybuilding supplement or dietary supplement is a crime!
