Liver failure is a life-threatening condition requiring urgent medical care. Most often liver failure occurs gradually but a rare condition known as acute liver failure occurs rapidly and can be difficult to initially detect. Causes of acute liver failure could be Tylenol overdose and reactions to certain prescription drugs, weight loss supplements, and herbal medications.
Take for instance, the sad case of a 20-year-old male who went to the ER in January 2007 with liver failure and mental confusion. He was transferred to a liver transplant center where, in the operating room, he was found to have necrosis of both the large and small intestines. Given these findings, the procedure was aborted and the patient was returned to the intensive care unit where he died 24 days later.
The liver, the largest gland in your body, has many complex functions such as synthesizing proteins to maintain blood volume, process fats for energy, metabolize carbohydrates in red blood cells and for brain function, secrete bile to aid in digestion, and eliminate harmful byproducts.
One of the primary ingredients in Hydroxycut products is hydroxycitric acid (HCA), a derivative of citric acid found in a variety of tropical plants. In animal and laboratory studies, HCA has shown promise in blocking fats but that evidence has not been so striking in human studies unless the user is also following a strict diet. HCA is a primary ingredient in many weight loss and body building supplements.
Early symptoms of liver failure are also prevalent in other conditions so they are frequently misdiagnosed. The initial symptoms include nausea, loss of appetite, fatigue, and diarrhea. As liver failure worsens, more serious symptoms include jaundice (yellowing of the skin or whites around the eyes), a tendency to bleed easily, swollen stomach, mental confusion, extreme fatigue, sleepiness, and coma.
Seemingly healthy people became stricken with acute hepatitis-like symptoms and liver failure after taking Hydroxycut weight loss products from two days to two months. With some, the liver failure symptoms continued even when Hydroxycut was stopped. For others, the symptoms went away when they stopped taking Hydroxycut. Most required hospitalization. Some needed life-saving liver transplants. For one young budding bodybuilder - it was simply too late.
