On May 1, 2009, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) sent out an alert telling consumers to stop using the following Hydroxycut weight loss supplements. The company Iovate Health Sciences of Ontario, Canada and Blasdell, NY, complied with the voluntary recall.
The FDA has received 23 reports of serious health problems ranging from jaundice and elevated liver enzymes which are indicators of potential liver injury, to liver damage requiring liver transplant, one waiting for a liver transplant, plus one death due to liver failure. All the people were previously healthy.
The 14 Hydroxycut weight loss products include:
These 14 Hydroxycut products are marketed to people who want to lose weight, burn fat, and enhance energy by water loss and low carbohydrates.
The FDA has not yet determined which ingredients, dosages, or other health-related factors may be associated with risks related to these 14 Hydroxycut products. The products contain a variety of ingredients -- herbal extracts, chemicals, and metals, some noted for liver toxicity.
Hydroxycut products have the Iovate or MuscleTech brand names. The weight loss products contain a variety of individual ingredients as well as many proprietary blends such as Hydroxagen Plus, Hydroxy Tea, HydroxyTea CF, Hydroxycut Proprietary Blend, Max! Liqui-Burn, Max! Weight-Loss Matrix, Hydroxycut Hardcore Proprietary Blend Proxyclene, Noreidrol Intensity Focus Blend, Lasidrate Delivery Blend, or Yohimbacore.
The products' labels declare minerals and herbs as well as extracts from Garcinia cambogia, Guarana, gymnema sylvestre, Rhodiola rosea, and Camellia sinensis (green tea). This last ingredient is banned in diet supplements in Spain and France. Before 2004, Hydroxycut, contained ephedra or Ma Huang as an ingredient; however, by the beginning of 2004, Hydroxycut was ephedra-free. After removing ephedra, Hydroxycut had gone through many formula changes.
The FDA has no authority to review weight loss supplements before they are marketed. Dietary supplements are not as tightly regulated as prescription drugs. People can buy Hydroxycut products in big box stores, grocery stores, and drug stores; no prescription oversight required.
Even following the removal of ephedra from Hydroxycut, the Centers for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN) continued to receive reports of liver injury associated with the best-selling Hydroxycut.
All you wanted to do is lose weight or buff up. You trusted the brand and commercial advertisements and now your good health has been compromised… perhaps forever. Fight back against false advertising and greedy negligent corporations.
Justice waits for no one.
