There have been some reports of serious liver injury including the need for liver transplant surgery. For one 20-year-old male, it was too late. He died after using Hydroxycut products. FDA has learned of several other serious problems that some Hydroxycut users experienced including seizures; heart attack and irregular heartbeat, rhabdomyolysis (a type of muscle damage) that can lead to other serious problems, such as kidney failure.
Who makes Hydroxycut products?
The company Iovate Health Sciences of Ontario, Canada and Blasdell, NY, makes and distributes Hydroxycut products. Other brand names include MuscleTech.
I still have half a bottle of Hydroxycut Regular Rapid Release Caplets. Should I finish the bottle?
No! Hydroxycut is not a prescription drug that you have to wean yourself off of with the help out of your doctor. Do not take any more. Take them back to where you purchased the caplets and get your money back.
What symptoms should I be concerned about after taking Hydroxycut?
Symptoms of serious liver disease include jaundice or yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes and brown urine. Other symptoms of liver disease might be general like nausea, vomiting, extreme exhaustion, weakness, stomach pain, itching, and/or loss of appetite. Also, light colored bowel movements are a definite sign.
What should I do if I develop these symptoms?
A. If you have the symptoms above or develop any other new symptoms after taking Hydroxycut, see your health care provider as soon as possible.
If I were going to have symptoms, how soon would they appear?
Symptoms could have occurred while you were taking Hydroxycut, or they could occur up to several months after you stopped taking it.
I thought ephedra was banned. Does Hydroxycut have ephedra?
No, ephedra was removed from Hydroxycut products in 2004. However, people still have liver injury without the ephedra ingredient.
What are the ingredients in Hydroxycut? The product advertises all natural.
All natural doesn't mean all safe by any means. That is a big misnomer in the advertising world. The ingredients are a combination of hydroxy citric acid (HCA), herbs, chemicals, and metals.
What if I have or had some of these symptoms?
Call your doctor or go to ER and tell them you have taken Hydroxycut. Then contact a lawyer. You may be eligible for a Hydroxycut lawsuit.
Why didn't the FDA recall this Hydroxycut product sooner?
The FDA doesn't have pre-marketing oversight of over-the-counter weight loss and body building supplements. The FDA only has oversight post-marketing and then has to gather all data which is not always reported in a timely manner.
How can I find out if other Hydroxycut products are being added to the recall?
You can find additional information in future FDA Consumer Alerts at http://www.fda.gov/
