Baxter Healthcare is recalling nine lots of heparin sodium injection 1000 units/mL 10-mL and 30-mL multi-dose vials from the U.S. market due to an increase in the number of reports of adverse reactions and possible deaths that may be associated with the heparin.
Baxter Healthcare began recalling the lots on January 17, 2008. A spokesperson for the company said they normally receives 60 to 70 reports during a given year of possible reactions to heparin, but so far for January 2008, they have received around 150 such reports. Their use should be immediately discontinued and segregated.
Adverse patient reactions include abdominal pain, abdominal pain (upper), decreased blood pressure, burning sensation, chest pain, diarrhea, dizziness, drug ineffectiveness, dyspepsia, dyspnea (difficulty breathing/suffocating), erythema (skin redness), flushing, headache, hyperhidrosis, hypoesthesia, hypotension or drop in blood pressure, lacrimation (tears) increased, loss of consciousness, malaise, nausea, pallor, palpitations, paresthesia (tingling), paresthesia (oral), pharyngeal edema (throat swelling), restlessness, vomiting/retching, stomach discomfort, tachycardia (heart rhythm disorder), thirst, trismus (lockjaw), and unresponsiveness to stimuli. These could lead to shock and/or death.
