heparin recall

What is Heparin?

Heparin is used to prevent blood clots from forming in patients who have certain medical conditions or who are undergoing certain medical procedures that increase chances of blood clots forming.

Heparin is in a class of medications called anticoagulants or blood thinners.

Heparin is also used to stop the growth of clots that have already formed in blood vessels. Heparin cannot be used to decrease clot size that has already formed. Heparin is also used in small amounts to prevent blood clots from forming in catheters that are left in veins over a period of time.

Heparin solution comes in different strengths; using the wrong strength may cause serious problems.

Heparin comes as an injectable solution (liquid) injected intravenously into a vein or deeply under the skin and as a less concentrated solution to be injected into intravenous catheters. Heparin should never be injected into a muscle. Heparin is sometimes injected one to six times a day and sometimes given as a slow, continuous injection into the vein.

When heparin is used to prevent blood clots from forming in intravenous catheters, it is usually used when the catheter is first put in place and every time that blood is drawn out of the catheter or medication is given through the catheter.

The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) is conducting an ongoing investigation of Baxter Healthcare’s multi-dose vial heparin production, but so far, the problematic source has not yet been identified.

Most of the serious adverse reactions of heparin cases happened at kidney dialysis centers. Other attention-demanding heparin cases included patients undergoing heart surgery or a specialized blood cell treatment called photopheresis.
