The stress response of the body is meant to protect and support us. When faced with a threat, whether it be to our physical safety or emotional balance, the body responds with fight or flight mechanisms. The stress response is what helped our stone age ancestors survive, enhancing their ability to fight or flee from danger. The problem with the stress response is that the more it is activated, the harder it is to shut off. Conflict at work and impossible deadlines keep your heart rate and blood pressure elevated. Extended or repeated activation of the stress response takes a heavy toll on the body that ultimately causes heart attack.

According to the American Psychological Association, 54 percent of Americans worry about too much stress in their lives. On the job stress is usually caused by three things:

Frustrations - Stressors include unsatisfying job, lack of promotions, unable to express yourself about your work situation without reprimand, the lack of proper training or the inability to learn the task
Conflicts – Disagreements with your boss or supervisor about workload, hours, days off, vacation time, and conflicts with fellow employees.
Pressures – Stress can stem from the expectations of others or the demands you place on yourself. You may feel pressure to excel at work or to meet unreasonable deadlines.

Reducing stress at work takes some effort:

Realize that the situation is not going to change so accept it for the time being and then take steps to change jobs or improve your skills in order to promote or change jobs.

Think positive: I can do this. Practice affirmations.

During your break or lunch hour – Read a funny book; meditate; stretch; eat a piece of fruit, cheese, or whole grain muffin or a low fat/high protein meal. If you can go outside, be with nature or jump rope for some aerobic exercise. Get away from those coworkers who speak negatively and contribute to the problem.

Workers’ compensation benefits

Three Department of Labor agencies have responsibility for the administration and enforcement of the laws enacted to protect the safety and health of workers. Almost every state has a workers' compensation department. Benefits vary from state to state.

OSHA regulates safety and health conditions in most private industries. Nearly every employee comes under OSHA's jurisdiction. Employers have a general duty to provide work and a workplace free from recognized, serious hazards.

Every employer shall furnish to every employee a place of employment that is free from recognized hazards that are causing or are likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees. In addition, employers shall comply with occupational safety and health standards.

Workers who are injured while on the job, who have been injured in association with their job or who have safety or health issues directly related to their job may be covered under workers' compensation.

Workers' compensation is a system of laws outlining specific benefits to which an injured employee is entitled, including lost wages and medical expenses. In other words, it is an important safety net for employees when they are injured while on the job or because of a job.

The specific issues associated with each case must be explored to determine the workers compensation benefits that an employee may be entitled to receive.

If you’ve suffered a stress related heart attack, you may be eligible to file a personal injury lawsuit. evaluating Contact Anapol Schwartz to see if you’re eligible to file a lawsuit. Workers compensation does not and will not cover all your needs.
