What's the difference between obesity and overweight? Obesity means having too much body fat. Overweight means weighing too much. The weight may come from muscle, bone, fat and/or body water. Both terms mean that a person's weight is greater than what's considered healthy for his or her height.

Obesity occurs over time when you eat more calories than you use. The balance between calories-in and calories-out differs for each person. Factors that might tip the balance include genetic makeup, overeating, eating caloric high-fat foods, and not being physically active.

Being obese increases your risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke, arthritis, and some cancers. If you are obese, losing even 5 to 10 percent of your weight can delay or prevent some of these diseases.

How has the prevalence of overweight and obesity in adults changed over the years? The prevalence has steadily increased over the years by gender, all ages, all racial and ethnic groups, all educational levels, and all smoking levels. From 1960 to 2004, the prevalence of overweight increased from 44.8 to 66 percent in United States for adults age 20 to 74. The prevalence of obesity during this same time period more than doubled among adults age 20 to 74 from 13.3 to 32.1 percent, with most of this rise occurring since 1980.

What is BMI? Body mass index (BMI) is a measure of body fat based on height and weight that applies to both men and women. That number should be used as a guideline in losing weight.

What are the heath risk factors for being overweight? The risks are diabetes, coronary heart disease, high blood cholesterol, stroke, hypertension, gallbladder disease, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea and other breathing problems, and some forms of cancer.

What are the health risk factors for obesity? All of the above plus complications of pregnancy, menstrual irregularities, urine leakage, depression, increased surgical risk, and increased mortality

How much weight can a person lose who has lap band surgery? It depends on how much a person initially weighs but some people lose up to 40 percent of their initial weight. As with any weight loss program, your mileage may vary and so will your results.
