Boniva & Actonel Problems go into Court Battle

Osteoporosis drug companies are going to court over bone drug claims. According to Larry Neumeister of the ASSOCIATED PRESS, NEW YORK, the two giant drug companies are waging in Manhattan federal court to wage war over claims about the relative value of these drugs aimed at protecting older women. These companies are suing each other. The question is, should you file a lawsuit against one of these companies if you were harmed by the side effects? These companies seem to be pushing doctors to use their drugs. So much pressure is being put on doctors that according to P&G lawyer Harold Weinberger, Hoffman-LaRoche has engaged in "an orchestrated, intentional campaign" to tell doctors and consumers that Boniva is as effective as its drug, Actonel, and the market leader Fosamax, from Merck & Co.

According to the AP article, the lawsuit was brought in U.S. District Court,"P&G said Boniva has been proven effective only against spinal fractures while Actonel has also been proven to reduce the risk of clavicle, hip, humerus, leg, pelvis and wrist fractures, and Fosamax has been proven to reduce the risk of hip and wrist fractures." However, we are concerned that these drugs may adversely impact femur bone health and jaw bone health under certain circumstances. In the case of the femur, by preventing the body from replacing old bone with new bone, thereby creating micro-fractures that accumulate and end up being serious, and in the case of the jaw bone, by causing ONJ (osteonecrosis of the jaw bone) by decreasing the number of healthy blood flow carrying blood cells.

According to the allegations, "It is dangerous to tell people and even doctors that something has been proven when it hasn't been proven," Weinberger said. We agree!
