Highly Flammable Furniture Cushions
Consumers have been in the dark about the dangers of polyurethane
foam yet flammable furniture has been known to the furniture industry
and the federal government for decades.Almost everyone who has made a fire in a fire pit or barbecue knows that it takes some time to really get started—unless you add lighter fluid or another source of fast-burning fuel. With the highly flammable starter fluid on the wood, it catches fire and starts burning brightly almost instantly.
Accidental Fires That Spread Rapidly
The same principle applies to unintentional fires, such as house fires: The stronger the fuel, the faster the fire will grow. And while most people wouldn’t dream of pouring lighter fluid all over their living rooms, many are unwittingly keeping a highly flammable substance inside the most frequently used piece of furniture in the house: the couch.
Unsafe Sofas. Foam Stuffing that Burns
Most sofas sold in the United States contain polyurethane foam stuffing, or “foam rubber,” which is actually a kind of plastic made flexible by adding thousands of tiny pockets of air. It can also be found in almost all easy chairs, ottomans and other soft furniture. Often compared by firefighters to “solid gasoline,” polyurethane foam ignites almost instantly when exposed to flame, then burns at temperatures that can exceed 1400 degrees and emits toxic smoke.
