Morphine is one of the most effective drugs for pain relief. It provides people with moderate to severe pain a break from their agony and a chance to be symptom free. However, the effectiveness of morphine comes with a price. It is a dangerous drug to which patients can develop a tolerance and to which they can become easily addicted. Doctors must, therefore, carefully monitor a patient on morphine to make sure that the patient is receiving the appropriate dose. There is often a fine line between an effective dose of morphine and a deadly overdose.
Overdose
An overdose of morphine can be serious and sometimes fatal. Patients are likely to experience trouble breathing and a dangerous drop in blood pressure.
While it is easy to say that a patient should only take the dose prescribed by his or her physician, sometimes patients overdose on morphine by taking what they believe to be the prescribed amount.
Recall
In November 2008, the Ethex Corporation issued a recall of Morphine Sulfate Immediate Release tablets because certain tablets were found to be double the normal size. That means that patients were potentially ingesting up to two times the prescribed dose of this powerful drug. Both the 15 mg and 30 mg tablets were included in the recall.
The recalled drugs included certain batches that were distributed prior to May 22, 2008 and have expiration dates ranging from 2008-2011. Since pharmacists were filling prescriptions with these previously distributed medications it can be difficult for a patient to tell if he or she was provided with potentially dangerous drugs.
The 15mg Morphine Sulfate Immediate Release Tablets are round brown tablets with a 15 on one side and ETH on the other side. The 30 mg Morphine Sulfate Immediate Release Tablets are capsule shaped brown tablets with a 30 on one side and ETHEX on the other side.
If you were prescribed Morphine Sulfate Immediate Release Tablets in either the 15 mg or 30 mg strength, the tablets match the description provided by the manufacturer and have an expiration date between 2008-2011 then it is advisable to stop taking the medication and to have the prescription refilled with tablets that are not subject to the recall.
If you take your prescribed medication and experience any symptoms of overdose such as respiratory distress or plummeting blood pressure then it is important to seek immediate medical attention. After the medical emergency is passed the information should also be shared with the FDA.
