Useful Medications for the Treatment of ADHD

Treatment of ADHD Attorneys

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a complicated condition that is often treated with a combination of medication and therapy. There are different types of medications on the market that have different effects and different risks. Most of the drugs used to treat ADHD are stimulants designed to help a patient’s ability to focus. However, in recent years a non stimulant drug has also been approved to treat ADHD.

While ADHD drugs are often useful and necessary components of a patient’s treatment, they are not without risks. The most significant risks associated with ADHD medications are cardiovascular and psychiatric. However, other risks may also be present for certain medications. Accordingly, the FDA has required the manufacturers of ADHD drugs to create Patient Medication Guides for each ADHD drug on the market.

Stimulants

Stimulants have been used for many years to treat ADHD. They work by helping patients to focus their thoughts and to tune out distractions. It is estimated that they have an efficacy rate of about 70-80% when they are used correctly. They are usually approved for use in patients who are at least 6 years old and present with moderate to severe ADHD in more than one area of their life (for example school and home.)

Some common ADHD stimulant drugs include Adderrall, Adderrall XR, Concerta, Daytrana, Dexoxyn, Dexedrine, Focalin, Metadate CD, Metadate ER, Methylin, Ritalin and Ritalin LA. Some, but not all, of these drugs are amphetamines. Amphetamines have a high risk of abuse and must be very closely monitored.

Non Stimulants

It was only in 2003 that a non stimulant drug was approved to treat ADHD symptoms. That drug, Strattera, is approved for use in children, teens and adults. Strattera is an inhibitor that allows some people with ADHD to focus better and become less distracted while taking the medication.

While Strattera is very effective for some patients, there are risks associated with its use. The biggest concern with the use of Strattera is the increased risk of suicidal thoughts among children and teenagers who use the drug. Parents are urged to watch their children closely for any signs of suicidal thoughts or tendencies. Other risks include the potential for severe liver damage and cardiovascular problems.

ADHD is a significant condition that often requires treatment. It is estimated to effect between 3-7% of school age children and 4% of adults in the United States. Those who suffer from the condition may have trouble focusing in school or at work and may have low self esteem and difficult personal relationships. Effective drugs can minimize these symptoms. However, it is important that the drugs be used safely so as not to create more problems than they treat.
