You started using Januvia or Byetta to keep your blood sugar levels under control, but now you’re facing life-threatening cancer. Why didn’t the manufacturers warn patients of this very serious health risk?
What are Januvia and Byetta?
Januvia is a daily prescription pill manufactured used to lower blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes. Byetta is a prescription injection of the drug exenatide that is also used to help control blood sugar levels. New research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association(JAMA) has shown patients using these diabetes drugs are about three times more likely to develop pancreatic cancer or biliary cancer than those who haven’t used the drug. Another study drew similar conclusions in a report published in the journal Gastroenterology in 2011. However, the manufacturers of these products are still marketing the drugs without warning users of these serious risks.
Known Side Effects of Januvia and Byetta
- Severe inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis), which can be fatal
- Diarrhea or nausea
The study published in JAMA also associated both drugs with elevated cholesterol levels (hypertriglyceridemia), gallstones, obesity and cystic fibrosis.
Pancreatic and Biliary Cancer
Patients may not know they have pancreatic cancer until symptoms show up at a more advanced stage. By then, the disease is even more difficult to treat and cure. Bile duct cancer, called biliary cancer, involves tumors that develop in the bile duct. Patients with this form of cancer may need dangerous liver transplant surgery or removal of part of the bile duct in addition to numerous therapies. Patients who take or have taken Byetta or Januvia should see their physician for a cancer screening as soon as possible.
If you were diagnosed with pancreatic or biliary cancer after using Byetta or Januvia for at least six months, do not delay calling attorneys Jim Ronca and Mike Schafle. You may have grounds for a diabetes drug lawsuit against the manufacturer, but time to file is limited.
