Denture creams such as Fixodent, Super PoliGrip, and PoliGripare classified as Class 1 Medical Devices by the FDA, which means that manufacturers do not have to list ingredients on the label. However, GlaxoSmithKline and Proctor and Gamble, the makers of PoliGrip and Fixodent, respectively, have both come forth to say that while their products do contain zinc, they have confirmed through studies that they are safe for anyone who uses the denture creams according to directions and that risks are minimal. However, an independent study by University of Texas researchers in 2007 found that there may be a link between denture cream and zinc poisoning, and many doctors believe this to be the case. More studies are needed before denture cream can be confirmed to cause zinc poisoning.
