Unfortunately, since the Afghanistan and Iraqi wars and its association with Dick Cheney, Halliburton has become a household name. It's not a brand that we love.
Former Halliburton employees in Iraq told a Senate committee that the company's KBR subsidiary knowingly puts unarmed non military truck drivers in dangerous war zones, which is a recognized violation of military law. Halliburton hires employees through a Cayman Island subsidiary in order to avoid U.S. tax and employment laws. Halliburton by design overcharges the U.S. government which burdens U.S. taxpayers for dining and other recreational services provided to the troops.
One such haunting example of an alarmingly irresponsible disregard for Halliburton contractors involved sending a 19-truck convoy of unarmed non-combatant civilians in military tankers down a closed road where there was an ongoing battle, when they knew their non military defense workers would be injured or killed.
Halliburton knew it was an extremely violent day - Good Friday, April 9, 2004. This incident is commonly referred to as the Good Friday Massacre.
According to a whistleblower, for possibly a year, Halliburton and KBR knowingly exposed troops and non military contract workers on defense bases to contaminated water from Iraq's Euphrates River where raw sewage is routinely dumped.
The level of contamination was roughly twice the normal contamination of untreated water from the Euphrates River and no attempt was ever made to notify the soldiers or civilian contractors.
Management was unclear if any correction action was taken. There was no documentation to show KBR tested the water as required by the military. Contaminated water may cause digestive and gastrointestinal problems, nervous system disorders, urological disorders, and mystery illnesses. Halliburton denied the charges.
