In mid-October, Delta Enterprise Corp. and the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a massive voluntary recall of drop-side cribs. The main problem with these cribs is that the spring pegs holding the sides can become pushed back and ineffective, causing the drop side to release. This creates a gap that can trap a child and even cause suffocation.
The cribs in question are the Delta side-drop versions that have a crib trigger lock hardware design. These cribs’ locks work with a spring peg and can be identified by Delta’s logo on the teether rail and the company name and address on the mattress boars. The following model numbers have all been recalled: 4340, 4343, 4520, 4600, 4620, 4624, 4625, 4629, 4660, 4665, 4720, 4750, 4751, 4850, 4855, 4857, 4880, 4920, 4925-2, 4925-2B, 4925-6, 4980, and 8605. These cribs were sold across the country between January, 2000 and January of 2007.
The Delta cribs that were recalled were produced in China, adding this manufacturing flaw to the list of dangerous products recently associated with this country. All of the cribs currently in stores have been repaired, but parents all over the United States may have purchased these cribs in the past. To add to the problem, it was discovered shortly afterwards that hundreds of thousands of more cribs, manufactured in Taiwan and Indonesia are the following model numbers: 4320, 4340, 4500, 4520, 4530, 4532, 4540, 4542, 4550, 4551, 4580, 4600, 4620, and 4624 produced January 2006 through November 2007, as well as 4640, 4660, 4720, 4735, 4742, 4750 produced January 1995 through December 2000, and 4760, 4770, 4780, 4790, 4820, 4840, 4850, 4860, 4880, 4890, 4892, 4900, 4910, 4920, 4925-2, 4925-6, 4930, 4940, 4943, 4944, 4947, 4948, 4949, 4950, 4958, 4963, 4968, 4969, and 4980 produced all years. Because many of these cribs were produced so long ago, they have often been passed to new owners or purchased second hand. With these models, the safety pegs are missing completely, causing the same dangerous gap, which could suffocate children.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission has been alerted of the death of an 8-month old due to this problem, as well as a number of other injuries. If these cribs are continuously used in homes, even more children could be injured. At the time of the initial press release, the government was aware of over ten different incidences when the pegs were missing or disengaged, including a few situations that caused injury or entrapment.
All of the defective cribs recalled were sold at major retailers, including Wal-Mart, K-Mart, and Target. Many were sold online as well. Although Delta is offering free repair kits for anyone owning a recalled crib, even if purchased second hard, it might be too little too late. If your child has already been harmed, it is important to take action against this company and their poor manufacturing policies. There have been over a million cribs recalled in the past few months, due to horrific tragedies. There is help. By contacting a lawyer today, you can learn about your rights, as well as send a message to companies producing items for children that these products need to keep kids safe.
