Werner Aluminum Attic Ladder: Watch Where You Step

Does this describe you? "I was climbing my Werner attic ladder when the lower section die cast hinge broke on the left side. I almost fell about 5 feet but luckily caught myself and held on until I could climb down. I cannot believe this hinge was made that way with such brittle die cast alloy material; very poor mechanical engineering and materials selection.

"I was using a brand new one and when I was on it, the lowest hinge simply broke causing the ladder to twist around dropping me off onto my garage floor. When I went to Lowe's to purchase a new one to install and send the old one back, I noticed that the new
ladder had different hinges. I am wondering whether Werner knew about this problem and didn't bother notifying anyone who had purchased these.

"The same thing happened to me today. I was coming down from the garage attic on the Werner S2200 Attic Ladder when the lower portion left side hinge broke. It is only 6 months old. I fell backwards approximately 5 feet onto the cement.. It is rated at 300 lbs. I weigh 230 and was not carrying anything. This really pissed me off, as I have had four back surgeries in the last 6 years.

"Well you can add me to the list of those that have had the experience of having this "FINE" attic ladder break. The ladder is rated for 300lbs and I'm far from being anywhere near that, and I never carry anything heavy up it as I have separate trap door with a
hoist for that. I was just stepping onto the second section, when both of the bottom hinges broke sending me to the concrete garage floor. The evening ended with a trip to the emergency room and my left ankle in a cast."
